Life is a single player game. It is not a multi player game. The things which really matter.. the ones which really really matter are internal, not external.
"The reality is life is a single-player game. You’re born alone. You’re going to die alone. All of your interpretations are alone. All your memories are alone. You’re gone in three generations and nobody cares. Before you showed up, nobody cared. It’s all single-player." - @naval
Warren Buffett asks a question if people behave the way they do to please others or play by the gallery because they want or have to? Are people satisfied with an inner scorecard or an outer scorecard? He often asks a simple question: "Would you rather be the world's greatest lover, but have everyone think you're the world's worst lover? Or would you rather be the word's worst lover but have everyone think you're the world's greatest lover?"
When you compare yourselves to others - you allow them to drive your actions. When you are young - it could be that you compare yourself against that kid who topped the class, or ran the fastest or played cricket the best or something else like - if only I could have been a little taller - I could have become a better basketball player. Some of these are trivial comparisons which lead to better performance, but most give headaches which you could do without. Knowing the limits of comparison is usually not easy.
The other day, I was comparing my two kids - who is going to be better academically, who can be a better business person, who would do better at something - why can't one be a little better here and so on and so forth.
Typically when you compare, and you end up short - it is because you are comparing their best features versus your own ordinary or mediocre features. In a sense you end up playing the other person's game.
A few years back, before I hurt my leg in a freak accident; the one thing which I really enjoyed most was running. Running 10K's and half marathons was very enjoyable. You tend to think about various things and mentally relax when you run for a long time.
The thoughts in mind are not about being faster than the person running next to you or to finish the race ahead of someone else - when the race is long, essentially it becomes a race against yourself. Setting yourself against your old best self. Setting a yardstick which you yourself had set and seeing if you can better that.
When you start comparing like that, you essentially try to become a learning machine updating your previous system with a better version. Its like getting a new software on an already existing hardware.
The question really is - what game would you want to play and what would you rather pass?
I was rambling around. But, that is really the question. It is really hard to think along those lines. Many a times, we die without thinking. I think most people would rather die than think :-)
Can you really beat Gary Kasparov?
Off-course you can. Just pick a game that's not chess. Maybe cricket which I'm sure he has no idea about.
Would you slog at work trying to please your boss? How can you become better at work?
Maybe yes, if you like your boss :-) Better still, pick things which you really know you can do well and maybe be world class in that small area.
It's important to cover fatal flaws (especially if you need domain knowledge to be successful), but really find those niches where you are best in class. Best in the world.
Knowing where to play and what to play?
The most important things in life are really measured internally. Does helping someone give you pleasure, does doing something scientifically or in engineering or being a medical doctor or fighting fires gives you pleasure? These questions are essentially very much determined by your nature, skill sets, temperament and the real "you".
Playing the wrong game is easy. That's essentially what most of us do. We may even win the game. But, how does that matter... winning the wrong game :-) It basically would be meaningless and pointless.
Thinking about what game you want to play is hard. Playing that is even harder. Pleasing the crowd at a common game is easier. Easy, crowded games are not very fulfilling. That's the way you can end up being mediocre. Most of us do end up there.
Know your game. Play your game. Help others play their games. Life's not a multi player game. Its a single player game played by multiple people who are playing their own games on the same playground.

IPL- A dash of bollywood, cheerleading and some cricket
Its here finally. Indian Premier League. Its now official- the final trial of the bollywood gyrations, baseball cheerleading and some cricket is here.
Will it succeed- I would want to say yes. But, logic says no. DLF paid 200Crs for title sponsorship, Shah Rukh Khan, Mallya, Preity Zinta + Ness Wadia combo, etc have spent $100M odd each. Can they recover this all?
I think not. Why- I will give you an example. This is the oft quoted example of 'Law of diminishing returns' in economics. If a person is thirsty- he drinks a glass of water. If he is very thirsty, may be 2 glasses of water. Very very very thirsty? May be a third glass. Can someone drink 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 glasses of water? No. May be if you are participating for the Guinness records :-)
We are a cricket crazy nation. No doubt. But, the question here is - are we that crazy to watch Warne, Mc Grath, Hayden, Kallis, Ntini and co. fight it out day-in and day-out? Will we be as passionate when we cheer them as we usually are when it is Sachin, Dravid or Ganguly? Donno.
This will decide if IPL is a success or no irrespective of the naach gaana, cheer leading and the accompanying dance sequences.. Or am I wrong?

The pleasures of gyming!
I strongly recommend this to all those souls who feel they need to be in the thick of action all the time... every time. Gyming.
Of all the basic human needs, the most important one seems to be 'the need to be counted.. the satisfaction of having achieved something every single day'..
Since yours truly falls into this category and gets bored at the drop of hat, gyming time has becoming crowning glory everyday nowadays!
Yeah also, who doesn't want that sculpted 'Greek God' body! Its been a month now since I started visiting the local gym.. and though no actual physical improvement on outset can be seen, the joy of getting physically stressed out makes the day ahead look a lot rosier!
For all the unlucky folks struck in jobs like me where male-female ratio seems to be rather skewed... more like 100:1 (whoever keeps telling there are 929 females for every 1000 males in the country must be kidding!) its a chance for seeing the 'chicks'..
Well.. I can go on.. but, I see you've got my point- join the gym my friend!
Here are some good cartoons I came across- worth reading for laughs..

Valentine's Day!
Well, yes. Its that time of the year when Saint Valentine sends his cupid to strike people across all religions, boundaries touching the right chord at heart. For all of you in love- wishing you the very best ahead.
For those who have been SAD (Single Always Day) throughout, let me advise you to celebrate it in your own style! Get on the best clothes, do all the pub hopping, get onto the dance floor, tap onto that music and keep the tempo going.. you never know when the cupid strikes, after all love is blind and can hit anybody!
For the rest of the aam junta who care for neither of these- its afterall another day! (why did you care reading this anyway).

Spiderman- Make way for the desi Makkadman
Watched Spiderman 3 today. After spending nearly 720 bucks on the movie (180*4) at PVR Cinemas; expected a lot more from it! Except for the initial half and some parts in second half where Peter Parker interacts with his Aunt.. the whole movie seemed like a dubbing straight from our Karan Johar flicks..
I was left wondering if it was Shah Rukh Khan wearing a mask and playing Spiderman?! Especially in scenes where he romances 2 women, it became increasingly clear that the movie had strong undercurrents from our desi flicks...
After the movie, I had to console myself by watching this yet again amazing mimic from Webchutney (I am becoming increasingly enamoured by this amazingly creative group). Here comes the amazing spoof- MAKKADMAN!! Enjoi maadi...

(Re) defining ‘VELA’
VELAness seems to be on everyone’s mind. A B-School student doing his summers would know this better than most others….So, what does this word VELA mean??
A person like me would expand this as ‘Very Energetic….but, Lazy Attitude’- I think of doing so many things every day in the morning, but somehow end up doing all the ‘VELA’ ones…
Most things in life are not left behind…the roads that lead me to Wipro, Madiwala are equally VELA…: ‘Very horribly Enlarged Lunar Abyss’..
It feels bad thinking about what I may finally end up as… VELA: ’Vacillating Energetically Looking for unknown Aim’? ..
Uhhaa….lemme get back to work now, enough of tis VELA…

The gr8 train journey.....in the making!
How not to travel in train?!
The situation: I ask a friend of mine to book a train ticket online(well....dont have a online account myself) from Pune to Bangalore on Saturday mid-night (5th @ 2.30AM....note tht date will be 5th and not 4th...haha)........as i had thought of attending SIBM's fest Transcend. Amit Karale also wanted to go to bangalore frm pune.....so, we plan to go together.......
As things sometimes dont work out as planned, i somehow stay back in mumbai (while karale goes to pune). So, have got to take a ticket till pune.....and then go to bangalore as planned.
What went wrong: Ticketz wrongly booked as 4th March, instead of 5th March. Well, the date would be 5th March since its morning 2.30AM. As it so happens, well....i end up with a ticket which is not valid.......and wat worse.... i did'nt realise this till quite some time....
Here's a nice chronological sequence of events.....that happened today.
7.00PM: i leave nitie, catch an auto.....and reach Kanjurmarg station. Immediately, i take a slow train to Dadar.
8.15PM: after enquiring, i take a ticket to pune. something fishy when i dont find my name in the list of seats booked in the list on s5 compartment.
8.30PM: have a masala dosa and mosambi juice outside dadar station....really gud one, a karnataka reataurant!
9:00PM to 10.30PM: start readin this book called 'Blink' based on how intuition can suggest u stuff which data cannot proove....nice book. make a mental note of finishing it in train.
10.30PM: board the train, and quietly occupy the seat.
10.45PM: train leaves, all happi:)
11.20PM: something wrong.....why has someone else got a seat to bangalore for seats 5 and 8 in coach s5??
11.30PM: TT asks for the ticket. well...well... i am travellin with a old ticket!! yes, i should have got on the train yesterday!!
wat now?!
11.45PM: call up karale who's in pune(he's a little bewildered).....weighing my options.
12PM: Ask the TT wat can be done: 2 options- take a ticket frm pune to bangalore in general (or travel in sleeper waiting for a confirmation) or quietly get down at Kalyan and get back to 'welcome to nitie'.
12.05PM: i call home....well more abuses, still thinking.....
12.10PM: i call up karale and tell him tat me goin bac.....yup...he's also a little edgy
12.20PM: i get down at Kalyan, apply for a refund (for the ticket....gone waste)...catch a train to kanjurmarg.......well, yup Kalyan is quite far frm Kanjurmarg man....never knew it was this far...
1.10AM: i reach kanjurmarg station....thank GOD......so many autowallahs are night soldiers!
1.25PM: welcome to nitie! am so happy, literally....pay the auto chap 80 bucks.....plz keep the change.
1.40AM: update blog......and now, go back to sleep........................azzzzzzzzzzz
better chk out the details frm next time:)......small things do matter, dont they?

Why is the court soo small??
Tried my luck at playing tennis today.....well, it was really a spectacle to watch me play. Seeing Roger Federer or Andy Roddicck on the TV makes one feel that its all too easy. All one needs to do is to give the ball a good hiding....well, found out that its not soo easy to do that!(after almost losing the ball on a couple of occasions.. trying to whack the ball). Trying to find the corners of the court, i managed to hit it right out of the fence into the dense undergrowth surrounding the tennis court. Finally realisation dawned on me that all one needs to do is to try hitting it back onto the playing area(yeah, the court seems too small at times when trying to do this..).
Trying to hit the ball onto the court is one thing and trying to 'serve' is all together a different 'ball' game... Here one needs to try and hit the ball as hard as possible giving it the right trajectory, right direction and also the right altitude. Now, if any one out of these 3 go awry, u are in for another gruelling mental contest to get it right the next time. At the end of my first service game, i finally won the mental battle though i lost the physical one....after serving 8 times continuously(some at the net, some outside, and some on the wrong side of the court) learned to keep the ball within the court. This cycle went on for quite some time...with each new game bringing new hope. Tactically wanted to try too many things, but somehow things were entirely out of my hand. Finally after more than an hour, lost the best of 5 games match..... Have made a mental note to play tennis more often and learn to play this wonderful game better.
But still thinking.. if only the court was a little bigger and the net a little lower, things could have been easier!
